Requirements

With the Social Hydrotherapy Scheme, the Spanish State provides pensioners that on doctors’ orders require the treatments offered at spas and who meet certain requirements access to these establishments at a reduced fee.

The Scheme is organised and funded by the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality, via the Institute for Older Persons and Social Services, which enters into agreements with thermal spas on an annual basis to book places for stay periods and treatments on behalf of the people availing of the Scheme.

Spanish citizens and the nationals of other countries may benefit from a place in the Social Hydrotherapy Scheme is they meet the following requirements:

  • If they are the recipients of Social Security System retirement or invalidity pensions, in all cases, or widower / widow or other pensions, only if the beneficiary has reached the age of sixty years. Spaniards residing abroad may also benefit from the places, as long as they are receiving a public pension, if they are over the age of 60 years and meet the rest of the requirements.
  • If they do not suffer from severe mental disorders that might alter peaceful co-existence at the establishments, or any infectious / contagious disease.
  • If they are self-sufficient.
  • If they require the thermal treatments that have been applied for and there is no medical advice to the contrary.
  • If they submit the application before the deadline specified in the call for applications and if they are given the score that is necessary to qualify for one of the requested spas and stay periods, according to the assessment scale established.
  • The applicant may be accompanied by their spouse or partner, for whom there is no obligation regarding receipt of a Social Security pension.
